This picture is based on a photograph I took at my home about six weeks after the Black Summer fires. I wanted to evoke the emotions of hope and despair, light and dark, but most importantly, continuing life. The central burnt tree used to cast a beautiful reflection in the late evening over the dam - so flawless and beautiful before it burned. It was cut down not long after the photograph was taken, so I’m glad I captured it before it vanished completely. After so much death and destruction from the fires I sometimes wonder how the beast chose what would survive and what would disappear forever.
